Arts & Crafts

School Buses

One thing I've done is to make construction paper buses & wheels (kids can do cutting depending on age). They assemble the buses. If I think of it enough ahead of time, I take pics of the kids that will be going on the bus and let them glue their heads into the bus windows ~ otherwise, I just let them draw the kids on the bus. Also, the older ones can practice writing the number of the bus & the school name.

Magazine Picture Cutting

Provide magazines for the children. Have them search for photos of anything school-related. Have them cut them out (scissor skills) and glue to construction paper (color of their choice - helps discover their favorite color!)

Theme Ideas

Chicka Boom Boom is a great theme I've used many times. Read the book and start introducing the alphabet one letter at a time. I did a project that started with each letter and also talked about what words start with "A". For example - A- apple printing. B- balloon prints etc... What does it sound like? I teach 4's & 5's, so since they are older, they can do this.

Discuss and make classroom rules. Keep your list short and simple so the children can easily remember them. Be positive and state what the children CAN do rather than what they cannot do. For example "Use kind words" instead of "No yelling." Another example is "Keep your hands to yourself" instead of "No hitting." Use what works for your program.

Play a fun game called "Whose Shoes?" Have the children take off one shoe and put it in a pile. Have the children take turns going to the pile and choosing one.....they can NOT choose their own! They need to find whose shoe they have and find out that child's name while returning the shoe!
