Songs & Fingerplays

It Is Autumn - sung to "Skip To My Lou"

It is autumn up in a tree.
It is autumn up in a tree.
It is autumn up in a tree.
Up in a tree it's autumn.

Leaves are changing up in a tree...
Leaves are falling from that tree...
Squirrels are living up in a tree...
Acorns are growing up in a tree...

Did You Ever See A Tree? - sung to "Did You Ever See A Lassie?"

Did you ever see a tree,
A tree, a tree?
Did you ever see a tree,
A tree in the fall?

There are red leaves and orange leaves,
And yellow leaves and brown leaves,
Did you ever see a tree,
A tree in the fall?

Did you ever see the wind blow,
The wind blow, the wind blow?
Did you ever see the wind blow
A tree in the fall?

The (red) leaves all fall down.
The swirl down to the ground.
Did you ever see the wind blow
A tree in the fall?

The (yellow) leaves all fall down...
The (orange)leaves all fall down...
The (brown) leaves all fall down...

Active Autumn Song

Practice color identification and listening skills with the songs. In advance, dupilcate a leaf pattern onto yellow, orange, red and brown construction paper enough for everyone. Laminate the leaves; then cut them out. punch a hole near the top of each leaf; then string it onto a like colored yarn to make a necklace. During the group time, give each child a necklace. Have the group stand to sing the song. Direct each child to touch the floor when his color of his leaf is heard in the song.

Down By The Oak Tree - sung to "Down By The Station"

Down by the oak tree
On an autumn morning,
See all the yellow leaves
Whirling to and fro.
See how they twist and turn,
Whirling, whirling, whirling.
Down, down, down, down,
Off they blow.

Repeat, substituting the names of other colors for yellow.

~Lois E. Putnam

5 Little Leaves - sung to "Five Little Ducks"

5 little leaves, so bright and gay
Hung on a tree one nice fall day
The wind came blowing round and round
And one little leaf came tumbling down.

(4 little leaves, etc.)

The Squirrel - fingerplay

Whisky, Frisky
Up he goes
To the top
Whirly, Twirly,
Round and round
Down he scampers
To the ground
Furly, Curly,
Tall as a feather
Broad as a sail
Where's his supper
In a shell
Snappity, Crackity,
Out it fell.

Leaves - sung to "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

All join hands and circle round
While we watch the leaves fall down.
See them twirling to the ground
See them whirling all around.
See them skipping here and there
See them flipping in the air.
Autumn leaves so peacefully
Falling, falling from the tree.

~Jean Warren

Summer leaves are hanging,
Hanging, hanging
Summer leaves are hanging
All day long. (stand with arms outstretched)

Autumn leaves are turning colors
All day long. (turn around)

Autumn leaves are falling,

All day long. (lower yourself to floor)

Five Red Leaves

Five red leaves, five and no more (hold up 5 fingers)
The caterpillar ate one, now there are four (thumb down)
Four red leaves, that's easy to see.
Along came a rainstorm, now there are three. (index down)
Three red leaves, nothing much to do.
A big wind blew, now two! (middle down)
Two red leaves, that's not much fun.
I glued one on my paper (ring down)
Now there is one. (hold up pinky)
Hang on, pretty red leaf! Your branches won't break.
You're one less leaf for me to rake!

Leaves Are Falling 'Round the Town - sung to "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"

Leaves are falling 'round the town
Watch them fall right on the ground
Autumn's coming, it is true
Then comes winter just for you
Leaves are falling 'round the town
Falling, falling all around.

~Judy Hall

Raking Leaves

My poor back will surely break,
If one more leaf I have to rake!
Crusty, rusty brown leaves!
Dusty, blustery red leaves!
Crunching, bunching, scrunching beneath my feet.
In a pile of crispy leaves, I'll find a welcome seat!

Woodland Forest Friends

Squirrels scurry,
Rabbits hurry,
Ants hide
Food inside
Woodland friends, everywhere,
For long winter
Must prepare.
And just in time
They pile away their stock -
All without benefit
Of calendar or clock!
