        Teddy Bear Slumber Party

Every year we have a special day for teddy bears. The children bring their teddy bears to day care, this is also done on share day. We even asked the kids to wear their favorite teddy bear shirt if they had one. Most did. The bears do everything with them that day. We made teddy bear pancakes for breakfast. One large circle with two small circles for the ears, and of course chocolate chips for eyes, nose and mouth. At circle time we read the story of the Teddy Bear Picnic. At lunch time we had a picnic with the bears. And sang the song for the teddy bear picnic. For snack time they had teddy bear grams, and teddy bear chocolate milk. They colored teddy bear pictures too. However, when the kids go home the bears SPEND THE NIGHT AT DAY CARE. We lay out two cots with blankets in the dining room. As the children go home they go in and lay their bear down, kiss him/her good night and cover them up. The bears lay in a row on the cot. We video taped the whole day with the bears. Especially when they told the bears goodnight. All the kids were very well prepared to leave their bears behind. The next morning when they arrived, what a site they found. There were empty party cups on the floor and table, potato chips and cookies scathered about. Paper streamers hung from the lights and pictures about the room. Toys were every where, and some child size chairs tipped over. We had bears under the table, hanging from the light fixture, playing at the computer, and just everywhere. Oh my what naughty bears we had last night, they threw a party!!! We even video taped the noise, with it dark so you couldn't see there is a lot of noise on the tape and loud music, mostly the CD called the Hamster dance. You could hear us shouting from another room for them to be still and go to sleep!!! naughty bears. The moms came in with the kids and they all got a kick out of the bears and their party. The kids all put their bears back on the share table, and picked up the mess the bears made. The kids did a very good job of cleaning up. They got a special treat for cleaning up after their bears, while their bears sat in time out.

        Teddy Bear Tea Party

Each child brought their favorite bear (or stuffed animal) and we had a tea party. We had play dishes, cups and saucers for the bears; and the bears sat at the little table and the kids served their bears pretend tea and cookies. Then the children ages 2 to 4 went to the "big" table and had cookies and apple juice (their tea). I had printed off a paper place mat with a picture of a bear for the placemat and they colored it when they were done eating.

        Teddy-Bear Mine

Invite children to bring their favorite stuffed bears to school. Give each an opportunity to tell about his or her bear and why it is special. You might ask its name, how it was acquired, what it looks like, what they do together, and how long he or she has had the bear.

        Teddy-Bear Catalogue

Have children tear or cut out pictures of toy bears from catalogues or magazines. Use these to create a teddy-bear catalogue. Each child selects a "favorite" bear to paste on an 8 1/2 x 11 in. piece of paper. At the top of the page write the child's name, at the bottom write the child's exact words as to why he or she liked that bear best. Put all the pages together in a class book entitled "Bears We Like Best."

        Teddy Bear Visitors

For Bear day we will all bring teddy bears from home. I will have all the kids make up a story with their bear as the main character that I will type and print for them. We will watch all the Winnie the Pooh's that I have (Which is most of them!) and read some Berenstain Bear books and some Little Bear books and some bear books by Frank Asche like "Moon Game and "Moon Dance". For crafts we will make some paper bears and glue them to craft sticks and have a puppet show with them.

        The Three Bear Family

First I get a refrigerater or washing machine box and cut off one of the sides. Then on the center piece I cut a peeked roof and a window on each of the sides. It's no longer a complete box but an opened up "U" shape. The kids can get on both sides of it and paint it using bright colors. When this is dry, we use it as kind of a back drop for the house. The kids build beds, chairs, and a table using the hollow blocks - good math activity trying to figure out the different size beds: if we use two blocks for the baby bed, how many for mom's and dad's? Same thing with the chairs. I provide pillows and blankets, and: a baby bonnet for baby bear, an apron and hat for mama bear, a tie and hat for papa bear, a dress and barrette with yellow curls for goldilocks, a giant bowl, middle sized bowl and baby bowl, a giant wooden spoon (the kind that hangs on the wall - a thrift store find), a tablespoon and a baby spoon. Then we enact the play.

Messy Table - Boo Boo Bears

What if your bear got hurt or sick? Set up a doctor table just for doctoring bears. Make sure there are plenty of bandaids, ace bandages, wraps, cold compresses, guaze pads, tape, injections (toy shots) stethoscope, ear looker, tongue depressors and rubber gloves. You would be amazed at all the stuff a hospital will give you if it is for educating little ones. It can’t hurt to ask. The children will spend a lot of time at this table so have lots of stuff.

        Hide N Seek Bears

Before the children go outside, hide their bears all over the play yard. When all of the bears have been found, let the children who want to continue the game take turns hiding and finding the bears.

        Teddy Bear Parade

Give each child a box with a rope pull-handle. Let the children decorate their boxes with crepe paper streamers. When the boxes are decorated, have the children place teddy bears inside. Then play music and let the children pull their boxes around the room in a Teddy Bear Parade.

        Bear Bounce

Place a small blanket on the floor with a teddy bear in the middle. Have 2 children each grab two corners of the blanket. Then let them have fun tossing and catching the bear with the blanket.
